RANT Forum London – Debate Double Bill

28th May 2014

Overview

Join us and our valued sponsors Trustwave on Wednesday 28th June at the Counting House for a RANT Forum double bill! Come along and join us for an ice-cold beverage and rant the night away over the two topics of the evening;

Ethical Compromises in the name of National Security: Have the Snowden revelations tarnished the image of the information security profession?

The Snowden revelations have revealed state surveillance mechanisms which are difficult to reconcile with legal limits and have existed in secret because of a misinformation campaign directed at the public. Many of these systems would not have been possible without the support of large numbers of security professionals. Supposedly, the security profession is about the highest moral principles (ISSA), reporting illegal activity (SANS) and the need to maintain public trust (ISC2). Has the profession lived up to its own aspirations or has it fallen well short? In a sure to be contentious session, you are invited to join the debate about where our notions of ethics come from, how we might judge behaviour as ethical and what this means for the security profession in cooperating with national security agencies.

An Ethical Hacker’s view of cybercrime trends: Global real world analysis of security derived from actual forensic investigations and incidents

Real-world data and expert analysis derived from more than 3,000 investigations and 300 incidents carried out by the Trustwave global team of ethical hackers and forensic investigators in 2013. The session will assess the major corporate threats across the fields of applications, networks, wireless, mobile and physical security and offer practical advice and recommendations to minimise risk and increase your organisation’s security posture.

Regular RANT Attendee

The RANT Roundtable Dinner was a very good evening. I met some interesting people and there was some lively discussion on various topics. I’d also like to mention some positive engagement that came about after last year’s Infosec Rant. Thanks to a very topical discussion at RANT on Neurodiversity, I was introduced to a group of neuro diverse students studying Information Security in Worcester, who joined me on a Pentesting project within my organisation. This project provided them with exceptional work experience and allowed us all to learn from each other. This successful project will hopefully be run again this year, and is all thanks to a conversation held at a Rant event.
