Pete CooperIndependent Cyber Strategy Advisor Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council, Cyber Statecraft Initiative
With 24 years in the Royal Air Force, Pete had a unique career, the first part was as a fast jet pilot and instructor and the second part was spent helping the UK get to grips with cyber operations. He completed his career in the role of the first strategic cyber operations adviser to the UK military.
Pete now specialises in helping organisations with strategic cyber security challenges and improving teamwork, culture and communications in complex business and risk environments. He is internationally recognised as a thought leader across multiple strands from nurturing cyber security culture to advanced defensive techniques such as Active Cyber Defence. He has contributed to US Cyber Security policy and also advised across multiple sectors including aviation (as the cyber strategy advisor to the International Air Transport Association), financial, energy and government. He is also a Senior Fellow at the prestigious Atlantic Council Cyber Statecraft Initiative and a regular speaker on cyber security including being scheduled to speak at RSA USA in 2019.
Pete’s passion for identifying and mentoring the next generation of cyber security leaders has also seen him set up the UK’s first and only cyber strategy competition for UK University students. This initiative focuses on increasing cyber skills diversity as well as gender diversity; in 2019 over 50% of the competitors were female, unheard of for an open cyber security competition. Having built a team of volunteers and galvanising support from across Government, industry and academia, his vison for transforming cyber skills education has been recognised in national policy and started changing what is being taught in UK universities. This saw him recognised in 2018 by IFSEC as 12th on a list of Global influencers in cyber security.
